Empowering Women Through Craftsmanship

Nsanshi Art Studio is a creative hub in Solwezi, Zambia, where artistry meets empowerment. Founded as a Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiative by First Quantum Minerals (FQM), our studio provides hands-on training in jewellery-making and design to uplift local artisans and bring the beauty of Zambian craftsmanship to the world. Through our work, we’re not only crafting unique pieces but also creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for artisans in our community.

Who we are

Crafting Innovation, Inspiring Design

We are a collective of Zambian artisans, trainers, and visionaries committed to transforming lives through art. Based in Solwezi, our team works to preserve and promote traditional craftsmanship while innovating with new designs. By fostering a supportive environment, we empower each artisan to develop skills, gain financial independence, and contribute to our vibrant community.

  • Goldsmithing history

Goldsmithing is one of the oldest trades, with techniques passed down through generations. Today, this art is still practiced much as it was centuries ago. Unlike many professions that require formal education, goldsmithing relies on mastering specific techniques. Currently, there is no jewelry TEVET ACCREDITED PROGRAM in Zambia, making our studio essential for training and preserving this craft.

  • Apprenticeship Programme

Kansanshi Mine funds our state-of-the-art equipment, enabling us to offer apprenticeships in goldsmithing to local women, including survivors of abuse and vulnerable children who have achieved their grade 12 certificates with Kansanshi Mine’s support. Our goal is to teach skills in designing and crafting copper items and jewellery, which can later be applied to silver and gold. Training is provided by Amerex Engineering.

Our programme began in June 2020 with 10 students in a two-year course. Students receive a stipend and mine employee benefits, allowing them to focus on their training. Graduates receive a certificate from Nsanshi Art, endorsed by Kansanshi Mine. Our first graduates completed the programme in 2022, with several continuing as mentor instructors and others securing employment in the jewellery industry.

  • Curriculum

The first year focuses on basic jewelry-making techniques. The second year covers advanced skills such as business management, production casting, laser spot welding, and CNC engraving. We use locally sourced materials like copper, silver, leather, and semi-precious stones, offering market-friendly prices and custom designs.
